Can you view the documents created in Word and Excel 2007 on Office XP Standard, and vice versa

Microsoft Office 2007 (or 2007 Office System) uses a new XML based file formats and extensions for new documents, workbooks, spreadsheets or presentations that been created by Word 2007, Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 2007. These new file formats (in .docx, .xclx and .pptx extensions) are not backward-compatible, meaning older version of Office suites such as Office 2003, Office XP and Office 2000 cannot open and read the XML files. Also, by default Office 2007 will save the document, workbook or presentation as new XML file format, which cannot be immediately opened or viewed or edited by users with earlier version of Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

To solve the compatibility issues of new XML based Office files between various version of Office 2007, 2003 and 2002 (XP), Microsoft has released Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, which when installed on the computers of users using Microsoft Office 2003 or Office XP (2002), will allow them to open, edit and save documents in the new 2007 XML formats. Please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

Please visit this link to download Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

Another solution to allow a file created by Office 2007 to instantly available and readable or editable across all editions of Office suites is to save the file in an earlier Office format (97-2003) manually. To do so, you will need to manually select “File Save As” option (cannot just simply click on Save button, which will still save as new XML format), and then select the file type and format as “Word/Excel/PowerPoint 97-2003 Document” (.doc, .xls, .ppt) format in the dialog box prompted.

To change default file save options in Office Word 2007, please perform the following steps if you could request your regional office to do so:

1. Double-click Microsoft Office Word 2007, double-click Word Options, and click Save.

2. In the right pane, right-click Save files in this format, and select Properties.

3. In Save files in this format, select Enabled.

4. In the drop-down box, select "Word 97-2003 document (.doc)" file format.

5. Click Apply to save the settings.

System Information shows only (3GB) while your Windows Vista has 4 GB of memory

32-bit Windows is limited to a maximum of 4GB and cannot see any pages above 4GB. 64-bit Windows can use between 8GB and 128GB depending on SKU.

Various devices in a typical computer require memory-mapped access. This is known as memory-mapped I/O (MMIO). For the MMIO space to be available to 32-bit operating systems, the MMIO space must reside within the first 4 GB of address space. This is independent of the OS running on the machine.

For example, if you have a video card that has 256 MB of onboard memory, that memory must be mapped within the first 4 GB of address space. If 4 GB of system memory is already installed, part of that address space must be reserved by the graphics memory mapping. Graphics memory mapping overwrites a part of the system memory. These conditions reduce the total amount of system memory that is available to the operating system.

The reduction in available system memory depends on the devices that are installed in the computer. However, to avoid potential driver compatibility issues, the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista limit the total available memory to 3.12 GB. If a computer has many installed devices, the available memory may be reduced to 3 GB or less. However, the maximum memory available in 32-bit versions of Windows Vista is typically 3.12 GB.

Physical Address Extension (PAE) extends the physical address space to 36-bits if your HW supports this. For most operations, the processor execution units will only see 32-bit addresses; the MMU will take care of the translation to 36bit addresses. No swapping here, only page translations (which are used regardless of PAE being on or not), this is a fundamental feature of any virtual memory operating system.

The OS and apps only see 32-bit addresses because the registers are limited to 32-bits (hence the “32-bit” architecture nomenclature). These are linear addresses which are extended to 36-bits in the translation to physical addresses, but they never show up in registers since there’s no room. It’s all internal until the address lines coming out of the chip are toggled.

So, the OS can happily handle up to 64 GB of memory for 32-bit PAE-able systems.

The above explanations do not change for 32 bit Windows XP either.

I hope this helps explain why you can not see 4 GB of RAM in system.

Windows Vista Experience Index

The Windows Experience Index measures the capability of your computer's hardware and software configuration and expresses this measurement as a number called a "base score". A higher base score generally means that your computer will perform better and faster than a computer with a lower base score, especially when performing more advanced and resource-intensive tasks.

Please visit the following web link to obtain more information on Windows Experience Index:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/f59082f4-6385-4a61-ba7e-2de9625a780a1033.mspx

Windows Vista Experience Index scores currently range from 1 to 5.9. Your computer is rated with an overall score, called the base score, and with sub-scores for each of five individual hardware components: processor, memory, graphics, gaming graphics, and primary hard disk. The base score is determined from the lowest of the five sub-scores, because your computer's performance is limited by its slowest or least-powerful hardware component.

Please visit the following web link which contains information on interpreting the base score:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/0fee4637-8b21-41f1-87f6-66d2205420d61033.mspx

You can use a wide variety of different hardware components to create a PC with a perfect score of 5.9. The following web link describes some high rated hardware list to increase your base score:

1) Close all your existing Internet Explorer 7 windows and start a new Internet Explorer 7 window.

2) Click on the big yellow star button located at the extreme top left part of the screen.
