notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

4. You will see a new notepad window on your screen containing some cryptic information. Go to the last line of the file, hit the enter key and type the sites you would like to block.

Example:

127.0.0.1 orkut.com

127.0.0.1 facebook.com

127.0.0.1 myspace.com

5. Save the file and exit.

None of the above sites will now open on your computer.

You can block as many websites as you like with the above technique. If you want to remove the ban later, open the same file as mentioned in Step 1, 2, 3 and delete the above lines.

Method 3: Restricted Sites

You can set Internet Explorer to restrict access to Web sites you do not want to be accessed by adding the sites to the Restricted Sites list.

3. Select Internet Options.

4. Then click the Security Tab.

5. Click on the big red circle with the white bar in the middle (Restricted).

6. Now, click the "Sites" button.

7. You may add a site to the Restricted Sites list.

(Note the format of the entry. An asterisk followed by a dot then the domain of the site you wish to restrict. You do not need to add the http:// or the www - just the domain name will suffice.)

8. After you have typed in the domain that you wish to restrict, click the Add button.

9. Then click OK.

You can add as many domains as you want to this list. Internet Explorer will display the Yellow Information Bar (Windows XP-SP2 - Internet Explorer 6) and restrict potentially harmful or unwanted or unsavory content from being installed or downloaded to your computer.
